feelings + emotions
Feelings and emotions are a major part of our lives. They can affect our mood, our attitude and our perspective; both positively and negatively.
To help kids understand the ‘rainbow’ of feeling and emotions, we, the little wuppies, will be describing each feeling, how it may affect a child, when and why it can affect a child, and how we can be used to help kids manage these feelings and emotions.
We will be accompanied by a gorgeous set of flash cards designed by Jacinta of Two Little Ducklings. These flash cards cleverly represent each feeling and emotion with shapes, facial expressions and words that kids can relate to more easily.
Please join us as we explore the ‘rainbow’ of feelings and emotion.
We may be small, but we can make a huge difference.
❤ The little wuppies
Love is one of the BEST feelings, ever!! And as little wuppies, it’s our job to help you feel lots and lots of love.
We have beautiful bright red hearts beaming from our chests. These hearts were not only designed to catch your worries, but they can store bucket loads of love, too!!
So, if you’re missing your mum or your dad, (or any other special person in your life), just ‘charge’ our hearts with their love, and you can take their love with you ANYWHERE you go.
Maybe your mum or dad are at work when you’re at kinder. Maybe they work far away. Maybe you live in different houses. Maybe you miss your brother when he goes to camp. Maybe you miss your nan.
Whoever you want to feel lots of love from, just have them fill our hearts with their love!
Anger is an emotion that can make you feel pretty horrible. It can make you want to yell and scream. It can make you think, say and do nasty things. It can make you scrunch up your face in disgust.
Not getting your own way. Not understanding something. Having to do something you don’t want to do. These are some of the things that can make you angry. And if you don’t know, or understand, why you’re angry, it can make you even more angry!!
One of the best things to do when you’re angry is to…
And focus on something else, like us, your little wuppy.
When you’ve taken a deep breath, run your fingers along our soft minky fabric backs and think about something that makes you happy! By taking the focus away from your anger, it gives it less power! We want your happiness to be powerful, not your anger.
Feeling awkward, shy and uneasy around other people can be really tricky.
It can make you feel uncomfortable. It can make drop your head. It can stop you making eye contact with people. It can make you go red in the cheeks. And it can make you withdraw from people.
Building your self confidence can help you overcome the feeling of embarrassment.
Carrying us in your pocket or bag, can help you feel brave and more confident. Knowing we are here to support you can make you feel less shy.
Talk to us before you go somewhere, or do something, you think might make you feel awkward or embarrassed. Tell us your feelings and we’ll help you feel brave.
And, if you have us in your pocket, and you feel uneasy, just grab hold of us and we’ll give you strength and confidence.
Being surprised can be both a wonderfully exciting feeling, but it can also be a feeling that isn’t that much fun.
Being shocked or surprised by something can really rattle you! You may hear some unexpected bad news, you may be disappointed by something you were pleasantly expecting, or something may happen that you just haven’t planned for.
All these things can put you on edge and make you feel uneasy. It may take you a little while to adjust.
To help you feel more calm after a shock or surprise, we are here to help!
Our soft minky backs are perfect for helping to soothe you. Just run your fingers across our backs while you place our heart against your own. You can send your shock to us to help you feel more relaxed.
Happiness is one of the MOST important emotions to feel, and one of the BEST feelings to express!
It can be shown with a huge smile. It can be expressed through a good hearty laugh. It can be seen in the sparkle of your eyes. Or heard in the clap of a joyous high five.
And we love knowing you are happy, because we are our happiest when YOU are happy!! We want to share in your successes; the great day you’ve had, the way you showed bravery, the fun and exciting things you’ve experienced!
Celebrate with us! Grab hold of us! Jump around with us! Sing and dance with us! Laugh out loud with us!
And during those times when you’re not feeling happy, it’s our job to help you. Hold us close and share your thoughts with us. Place our heart against your own, and we’ll send happy vibes to you to help make you smile!
We wear big smiles to encourage your happiness!!
The Green Eyed Monster. Envy. Resentment.
Jealousy is one those feelings that can be so harmful; to yourself and to others. It can be isolating. It can be vengeful. It can be hateful. And we will do all we can to ensure jealously is a feeling that does not stick around!!
You might feel jealous when a new sibling is welcomed into your family. You might feel jealous if someone is nominated class captain instead of you. You might feel jealous if somebody else has something you’ve always wanted.
And although jealousy can be a valid feeling at the time, if you let it grow, it will make you so, so unhappy.
Talk it out! Share your thoughts. Grab hold of us and tell us everything you’re feeling. Let it out. Let it go. Try to see the good in the situation rather than focussing on the part that upsets you.
Feeling jealous will prevent you feeling other wonderful emotions. We will help you move on so you can experience fun and happiness again.
Afraid. Worried. Frightened. Experiencing these feelings and emotions are our body’s way of protecting us. Weird, right? But hear us out…
When we are faced with a scary situation, our brain sets off an alarm in our heads and tells our body to prepare for danger. Our fear and worry acts like a warrior; something that protects us. Sometimes we need our warrior. Other times, it’s just being too protective! And that’s when we can help. We help to ease your worries and lessen your fears. We help you to feel brave, and strong.
You might be scared of the dark. You might experience nightmares. You might not like it when things change. You may feel scared in the classroom, on camp, at a friend’s house.
Put our heart against your heart, and you can send all your worries to us! Carry us in your pocket. Pop us under your pillow. Bury us in your bag or sleeping bag. Having us by your side will help you feel more confident and protected. We’ll help you feel brave which means you’ll feel less afraid, less worried and less frightened.
Feeling relaxed is a very important way to allow your mind and body to rest. Being calm helps you to focus on tasks properly. Being calm helps you to make clear decisions. Being calm allows you to enjoy lots of exciting and fun times in a more relaxed way!
But sometimes, if you’re scared or worried about something, it can be really hard to feel calm. Your mind might be racing. Your heart might be beating fast. You may not be able to keep still. And your breathing may be quickened.
To help slow your breathing, pop one of us on your tummy. Try making us move up and down by breathing in slowly and deeply, and breathing out softly. If you don’t see us moving, keep practising your breathing.
Our soft minky backs can also help calm and soothe you. Run your fingers across our back, or place us against your cheek. Or you can run your fingers through, or across, our satin tag to help you, too.
Feeling calm and relaxed will help your mind and body think and feel things more clearly. Keep us close to you and let us comfort you and keep you calm.
Feeling proud is a very powerful emotion. It makes you feel happy. It makes you feel strong. It makes you feel confident.
Pride can be felt when you spell a word correctly that you’ve been practising for AGES. Pride can be felt when you overcome a fear. Pride can be felt when you have tried your absolute best at something!
Pride helps you to feel encouraged; to want to do what you just did again and again. It makes you feel good, and when you feel good and happy, life is so much more fun!
And we love celebrating your happiness. We want to congratulate you on your spelling test, congratulate you on being brave and overcoming your fears, and congratulate you on being the best YOU you can be!!
So tell us!!! Talk to us. Cuddle us. Send your happiness to us. Let us be part of your celebrations because if you’re proud of yourself, we’re proud of you, too!
Sadness, unhappiness and misery, are feelings that are caused by a number of experiences.
The death of a family member, friend or pet. Hearing bad news. Losing something you love. Not having a friend to play with. Feeling left out. Being teased by others. Not feeling or doing your best.
Being sad can make you cry. It can make you frown. It can make you want to hide away. And it can make you very, very unhappy.
When you feel sad, it’s really helpful to feel comforted. You can rely on us every time you feel sad. And one of the best things to do when you’re sad, is to cuddle. So give us a really big cuddle. Put our heart against yours, and let us send you our love and comfort.
Hold us tight and tell us why you’re sad. It may help you feel better to get all the sad things out of your head. And don’t worry if tears fall down on us. We dry quickly! And it means the sadness you feel is coming out, and that’s a good thing.
Oh, confusion! You are one of the those feelings that bring out other feelings!!!
When you’re confused, you can feel angry, sad and sometimes even scared. Feeling confused can be so overwhelming. It can make you feel frustrated, and even lost, too.
You can feel confused at school while trying to learn. You can feel confused when put in a tricky situation with friends. You can feel confused when changes are happening around you. And with confusion comes frustration. But rest assured, we are here to help!
A great way to overcome frustration is by finding calm. To help you do that, our backs are pretty useful – running your fingers across our soft backs will help to calm you and ease your frustrations. You can then talk to us about what’s confusing you and how that makes you feel.
And we love cuddles, too. We believe that a good hug can make your heart happier.
Zzzz… Feeling sleepy, tired, drowsy or exhausted can make you grumpy and irritable. You might not feel like doing much, and you may just want to sit quietly for a while. And that’s okay.
Feeling tired is your body’s way of telling you it’s time for you to rest. You may have had a busy day. You may not have slept well the night before. You may not be feeling the best. Or you may have been so worried about something that it made you tired.
Listen to your body when it’s telling you you’re tired. Sit quietly. Lay down. Close your eyes. And fall asleep if you need to.
We love, love, love being cuddled, so if you’d like a little extra comfort as you rest, we’re here! We don’t talk too loudly. We don’t wriggle around too much. And we don’t make lots of noise. We’re a perfect resting companion.
Wow! What a ‘rainbow’ of feelings and emotions! We hope you have enjoyed exploring them all with us.
We have loved describing each feeling and emotion for you, how it may effect you (and why), and how we can be used to help you manage these feelings and emotions.
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Jacinta from Two Little Ducklings who created the amazing flash cards we used to help you explore the ‘rainbow’ of feelings and emotions. Her generosity and talent is greatly appreciated.
Remember, it’s never wrong to feel the way you do, but if that feeling makes you unhappy, it’s really important to talk to someone else about it. And we’re always happy to come along and be by your side when you do go and talk to someone else.
Which feeling or emotion do you find the trickiest to deal with?
We may be small, but we can make a huge difference.
